S644 Signed into Law!

Government Affairs, TAA News & Updates,

On July 2nd Governor Cooper signed S644! Under North Carolina law, the Governor must sign or veto legislation within 10 days once received from the General Assembly or it becomes law automatically, during the legislative session. Without Gov. Cooper's signature or veto, S644 was slated to become law on July 3rd.

S644 Landlord/Tenant Changes unanimously passed both Chambers at the General Assembly. The bill was sponsored and championed by Senators Danny Britt (R- Columbus, Robeson), Jim Perry (R-Lenoir, Wayne), Paul Newton (R- Cabarrus, Union). TAA was proud to support this bill, which was AANC’s top priority in this legislative session. Designed to streamline and advance landlord/tenant law in North Carolina, the passage of this bill will address debt collection clarification, tenant criminal record screenings, and clarify rights for collection of property in small estates.

AANC's 2021 Legislative Packet includes a great summary of the changes here.

Officially closing the gap on this long-standing priority is a great win for housing providers across the state. Thank you to everyone who participated in legislative visits and contacted lawmakers about this bill!
