WOW! What a success 2017 has been. In 2017 we did a reboot and for the first year since its inception, A New Lease on Life had a fully constituted Board of Directors consisting of 10 dedicated volunteers (In alphabetical order: Marty Babcock, Danielle Butler, Leslie Mathis, Misti McElwee, Katrina Murdock, Terry Ragland, Elizabeth Godwin Riley, Jeannette Steele, April Vasta and myself) and 2 awesome staff liaisons in Josie Eatmon and Meg Palumbo. In our first meeting of the year we set what we thought was a reasonable goal of raising $3,000.00 for the year. This goal was based in large part upon donations given to A New Lease on Life in previous years. That history is what puts this next information in proper context as we are excited to officially announce that, due to the generosity of the members of the Triangle Apartment Association and other local companies, we were able to raise $14,069.50!
This money will be used to directly benefit local families participating in this program and will have an immense impact on their lives. In short, these families became homeless, entered a transitional housing program, and after completing several benchmarks within that program, enter into a lease agreement (with a graduated rent plan) moving into a new apartment home while continuing with the program under the supervision of Family Promise of Wake County. Once the initial lease term is up, the family may renew the lease for one additional year at a slightly discounted rent before they "graduate" at which time they have the option renew their lease at market rent. Through the generosity and support of the members of the Triangle Apartment Association A New Lease on Life has been able to assist just under a dozen families through this program since its inception; at least one of whom is now a proud owner of a Habitat for Humanity Home.
These families come into the program with little to nothing. When they are ready to move into their new apartment home, A New Lease on Life is able to provide some of the basics like cleaning supplies, mattresses, or a dining room table. With the monetary funds raised, we are able to purchase specific items based on the family's needs. So, again THANK YOU to everyone who donated this year and helped us get families back on their feet and into a home. Keep an eye out in 2018 as to how you can continue to help in the battle against homelessness.
